Potential Issues with Catalytic Converters
Your exhaust produces emissions that can be damaging to the atmosphere if they are released into the air. Catalytic converters are designed to substantially reduce the amount of harmful pollutants getting out.
This is achieved by taking the gases – hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides – and converting them into water vapour. All petrol cars manufactured after 1993 need to have one of these catalytic converters fitted to the exhaust.
Catalytic converters include a core of ceramics riddled with pores that measure less than one millimetre. These pores have been coated with powdered catalysts that contain several metals, including platinum, rhodium, and palladium.
Because they’re close to the engine, they heat up and the chemical structure of exhaust gases passing through it changes in a way that smog is removed. It will be turned into nitrogen and oxygen instead.
What to Look Out For
Most problems with catalytic converters stem from temperature changes in the exhaust system and they need to be checked sooner rather than later. The converter can become a lot less effective if the problem is left unattended for too long.
If you do need catalytic converter repairs, then the place to come is Trickett Welding. We will carry out an exhaust check and advise on the best course of action to get the problems resolved quickly, affordably, and comprehensively.
In some cases, catalytic converter replacements are required due to a fault in the engine’s management system. Our team has access to the latest diagnostic equipment, so we will get to the bottom of the problem and ensure that no further damage is caused.
Trickett Welding advises a check-up and possible catalytic converter repair if you have recently noticed any of the following symptoms in your car:
- Dark Exhaust Smoke
- Excessive Heat Under the Vehicle
- Reduced Acceleration
- Sluggish Engine Performance
- Smell of Sulphur or Rotting Coming from the Exhaust
Reasons to Choose Trickett Welding for a Catalytic Converter Repair
The majority of modern cars have diagnostic systems in place that utilise oxygen sensors in order to detect changes in the exhaust fumes. A red light flashing up on your dashboard should therefore notify you about possibly needing a catalytic converter replacement.
